Spokesperson: Latrobe City Mayor Kellie O’Callaghan

Latrobe City Council Mayor Kellie O’Callaghan has expressed disappointment that members of the Federal Labor party did not meet with Council representatives during a visit to the Valley today. Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten and Shadow Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations Brendan O’Connor travelled to Moe to meet with local manufacturing works.

"The Latrobe City community is facing a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty. We would have welcomed the opportunity to discuss the priorities and concerns of our community with Mr Shorten," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"Our community are galvanised to fight for what they deserve and every opportunity to discuss this with the nation’s elected representatives is vitally important.

"The epicentre of all efforts to support this community through a transition must be focused on Latrobe City, the Latrobe City community, its residents and ratepayers.

"We firmly believe that the community must be involved in any decision-making process.  As the level of government closest to the community, we would expect to be front and centre in any transition or diversification approach.

"While we are always welcoming and respectful of elected representatives visiting our community, we believe that all visits at this point in time must include a discussion with Council around the issues which are pressing for our community."
