Mayor Says Upgrade Will Be Worth $1 Million

The Bairnsdale City Oval will receive a face-lift worth $1 million to be completed by early 2006.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 3rd February 2005 - Back to News

Mayor Cr Jane Rowe said work would begin as quickly as possible and follows the news that the State Government will commit $435,000 toward the construction of a multipurpose sports facility at the oval.

Sports Minister Justin Madden last week announced that the Government’s share of the redevelopment would be funded through the Major grants category of the 2005/2006 round of the Community Facility Funding Program (CFFP).

Cr Rowe acknowledged the efforts of the Bairnsdale City Oval Committee of Management, under Chair Bernie Eastman, and Council’s Recreation Planner, Al Campbell, in working together to achieve this major funding.

"This result has shown what community spirit and hard work can achieve "she said.

"It is a prime example of how the community can work with local and State Government to achieve a vision for the benefit of the whole community."

Cr Rowe announced that the first stage of the upgrade would involve extending the change and clubroom social facilities and upgrading the outdoor lighting to allow nighttime events.

"At a later stage we will begin on the work around the oval including completing the perimeter road and installing new seating around the edge of the main oval, Cr Rowe said.

"The Master Plan also includes the addition of a children’s playground and an upgrading of Peppercorn Park."

Cr Rowe said that as well as the State Government’s funding, money will come from the East Gippsland Shire Council, Bairnsdale Football Club and the Bairnsdale City Oval Committee of Management on a ‘dollar for dollar’ basis.

"This will mean a contribution of $160,000 from Council, $200,000 from the Bairnsdale Football Club and $75,000 from the Committee of Management, with further contributions expected from the business community," she said.

Cr Rowe said that the benefits flowing from the upgrade would be considerable.

"We will have a facility suitable for major events, and potentially events such as games in the pre-season AFL competition," she said.

"This will have a beneficial flow-on effect to regional tourism as well as to the overall economic and sporting wellbeing of East Gippsland."

Cr Rowe also said that work done by the Committee of Management and their volunteers to upgrade the playing surface to date had been fantastic.

"The new first-class facilities will encourage greater participation in sports including junior and senior football, netball and men’s’ and women’s’ cricket," she said.

"It will also ensure participants have suitable change rooms, training and medical rooms and other amenities."

The venue currently caters for local football and netball clubs, dressage and cricket, as well as servicing the Fire Brigade and a range of recreational users.
