Acclaimed printmaker to visit Latrobe Regional Gallery Australian printmaker Graeme Peebles will give an artistic talk on his intricate and technically demanding work at Latrobe Regional Gallery tomorrow. By Latrobe Shire Council - 28th July 2004 - Back to News Graeme Peebles’s new exhibition, Out of the Shadows: The Mezzotints of Graeme Peebles is currently on display at the Gallery and will be featured until Sunday 12 September.
Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, explained that mezzotinting is a difficult printmaking technique that involves working from a black background and blocking in the light areas.
"Graeme Peebles is a key figure in Australian printmaking and his current exhibition includes a series of mezzotints ranging from surrealist iconography to Australian landscapes. Peebles’ current works are inspired by the majestic terrain of Lake Eucumbene and also feature the ever-changing storm fronts that roll across Kosciusko National Park," Ms Tegart said.
"Peebles has a passionate and relentless approach to his work, mastered primarily through trial and error. Whether he is driven by brutal stories from history or the grandeur of nature, his work is the product of a truly dedicated artist and visitors will be amazed at the mastery of his technique and the stunning beauty of his prints," Ms Tegart added.
Out of the Shadows showcases more than forty works, with many pieces taken from Queensland University of Technology’s art collection, which houses Australia’s largest public collection of Peebles’ work. Queensland University of Technology is touring the exhibition.
Graeme Peebles will give an artist talk at the Gallery on Tuesday 3 August at 3pm. Tickets cost $5 adults, $3 concession and are free to members of the Gallery Society. Wine tasting with the artist will be held after the talk at 5.30pm. Glennmaggie wines, which have been featured in Peebles prints, will be tasted.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
