New Rural Address Numbering

Rural residents with RMB or Lot Number addresses have been asked to implement a new numbering system to make it easier for the emergency services and Australia Post to find their properties.

By Wellington Shire Council - 24th May 2007 - Back to News

Wellington Shire Council has been working with Australia Post and the emergency services for some time on the Rural Addressing System. This system is designed to replace the current mix of RMB and Lot Number addresses with a consistent and logical addressing system. A single system will greatly aid Australia Post and emergency vehicles in locating properties.

"The new system makes it easier by providing each rural property with a rural address number, road name and locality," said Mr Jim Wilson, Director Corporate Services for Wellington Shire Council.

"This means that each property will have just the one address for both the property and for postal purposes," said Mr Wilson.

The adoption of rural address system has required Australia Post to make changes to some current postcode boundaries to ensure that they line up with the locality boundaries. This has meant that some residents may be allocated a different postcode.

"All affected residents, only those with RMB or Lot number addresses, should receive a letter showing their new address," said Mr Wilson.

"The new system will operate from 25 June and affected residents should use their new address from that date on.

"It will make mail delivery easier and more importantly help police and fire in the event of an emergency," said Mr Wilson

Post Office Boxes are unaffected by these changes.
