Inaugural concert for soundshell on Sunday 15 OctoberBands, singers and children’s entertainment will feature during a fun-filled day, as an inaugural concert launches the stage career of the new Loy Yang Power Latrobe Community Soundshell on Sunday 15 October. By Latrobe City Council - 4th October 2006 - Back to News The soundshell, located in Victory Park Traralgon, has received the final coat of paint, surrounds have now been landscaped, microphones tested and the metaphoric curtain is about to rise on the entertainment.
The soundshell’s inaugural concert will commence at 11am and finish at approximately 3.30pm on the Sunday, and is a free event.
Showcasing a diverse array of local musical performers including the City of Traralgon Band, the Latrobe City Youth Band, the Luke Draper Band, the Yallourn Madrigal Singers, Nik Bagshaw and more, the concert will be the community’s chance to join in the celebrations and be a part of the festivities.
The musical performances for the day will be augmented by a range of children’s interactive activities including face painting, a jumping castle, Radio Station 3TR giveaways, and performances by Dorothy the Dinosaur and Ronald McDonald.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said the historic occasion will see the Latrobe community come together to celebrate the launch of the significant landmark project, in a relaxed family-orientated setting.
"This is a very exciting moment for all those who have been involved in the soundshell project since its inception. In particular the Traralgon Lions, who originally promoted a plan to develop a soundshell and stage area in Victory Park in the 1980s. We will all see a dream finally realised that has been twenty years in the making.
"This will also be the opportunity for us to thank those who have worked so hard to develop the new facility, the steering committee, and those who have contributed their time and labour and dipped into their pockets to see this project become a reality," Cr Price said.
"The Loy Yang Power Latrobe Community Soundshell and surrounding area has the capacity to cater for an audience of 8,000 people. While the vast majority of the audience will be located in the open air; the stage, performers and equipment will be protected from the weather under the soundshell roof. This is going to be of enormous benefit in the planning and production of future events," Cr Price said.
Cr Price, said the venue is unique to the Gippsland region as no other facility within the region has the capacity to cater for such large audiences.
"The soundshell will provide direct economic and social benefits to the Gippsland region and build community pride; as for the first time in the region’s history the community will have access to events that have previously been confined to capital cities and larger provincial centres," Cr Price said.
Council has invested $121,000 in creating the soundshell, together with State Government funding of $75,000; with the community led by the Traralgon Lions Club and supported by Loy Yang Power, Bahcon Steel Products, Tropic Design Group, B & F Neilson Builders, RW & AR Inglis Electricians, Tattersalls, and the public at large, contributing cash and in kind a further $164,000.
