Tucked away on the edge of the Snowy Mountains along the Great Alpine Road, Omeo is a gateway to some of the High Country’s best experiences. Now, the path to adventure in Omeo is even smoother and safer thanks to upgrades to the main street.

Revitalising Day Avenue

Backed by $200,000 from the Victorian government and supported by RDV, a 250-metre stretch of Omeo’s heritage-lined Day Avenue - from Short Street to Sebastapol Hill Road - has been given a fresh new look.

The upgrades have created a more inviting and accessible space for locals and visitors while creating 10 local jobs during construction and a further 2 ongoing maintenance roles to help keep the town looking its best. Visitors and locals can now find their way more easily with new and improved paths, signage, and a new raised pedestrian crossing linking both sides of the street.

Smoother edges have been delivered with more than 500 metres of upgraded kerbs and channels while new street furniture offers more opportunities for people to connect, rest and explore. Trees have been planted in protected spaces along the street, and new plantings added to pavement cut-outs, bringing a vibrant look and feel to the town.

Supporting active communities

Designated parking has also been delivered to make it easier for people with mobility challenges to navigate the town centre. New bike parking on the main street supports riders exploring Omeo’s world-class trails. This includes the 114 kilometres of cross-country and gravity trails delivered by $4.1 million investment from the Victorian government, catering to all skill levels, from novice riders to experienced mountain biking enthusiasts.

The works complement new worker housing in Omeo being delivered through the Regional Worker Accommodation Fund, which is set to boost services provided by Omeo District Health. The new modular housing unit is already on-site at Omeo with essential service connections underway - bringing the housing one step closer to welcoming workers and their families, who will play an important role in supporting health and wellbeing outcomes for the town.
