Get Ready For Active Australia DayShake off the Winter blues and spring into action for Active Australia Day. By Karen Gregory - 23rd September 2002 - Back to News Wellington Council is organising a huge range of activities for this year’s Active Australia Day on Sunday 27 October.
Schools, clubs and organisations are being invited to join in this national event by promoting their chosen sport and recreation pursuits at a Field Day at McMillan Park, Sale.
Council’s Recreation Planner Michael Rowell said the day would be filled with demonstrations and displays designed to encourage people to become involved in sport and leisure activities.
"This is the fourth year Wellington has promoted Active Australia Day and the event is becoming more popular every time," he said.
"The aim this year is to base the central event in Sale involving as many Shire-wide schools, clubs and organisations as possible.
"Throughout the day people will be able to take part in activities, enjoy displays and generally browse among a whole range of opportunities for fun and friendship."
"The increasing lack of physical activity in today’s lifestyles represent a serious physical health threat to individuals and financial burden in medical care to the community.
"Having fun, developing friendships and connecting with other people in the community through recreation is the main message of Active Australia Day."
Michael said due to the increasing popularity of the event, Council was making plans to develop Active Australia Day into a Shire-wide concept next year.
"This is a great opportunity to give young people participating in sport leadership programs some hands on experience in dealing with a large public event.
"We’ve already had discussions with Warwick Dundas who runs Maffra Future Leaders program out of Maffra Secondary College.
"Young people receiving training in event managment and coaching may be asked to plan and conduct events in their local community as part of their practical learning experience.
"This is an innovative and cost-effective approach to create local opportunities for all communities throughout Wellington".
Wellington Council has appointed an Active Australia Day Co-ordinator, Lindy Butler. Anyone wishing to become involved can contact Lindy on 5142 3375 or 0417 537 016.
