Moe Student Helps Lead The Way For Victorian Education (l - r) Dr Dennis Gunning, Ben Falzon, Antony Svasek, Stacey Darby, Minister Lynne Kosky, Emma Lewis, Helen Praetz, Timothy Piper, Victoria Director - AIG Gippsland scholar shows impressive dedication By Emma Kae - 19th September 2002 - Back to News Student of Lowanna College, Ben Falzon, impresses an audience of Victoria’s education and training leaders with his dedication to education.
Ben is participating in the 12 month trial of the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) program. The VCAL experiment commenced at the beginning of 2002 with 450 students statewide taking part in the program.
VCAL is a new type of schooling that creates an opportunity for students to be educated in the workplace. This provides students with more chances to develop hands-on skills in their area of interest than the traditional Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) provides.
Ben was one of two Victorian students to be featured in the VCAL demonstrative film. The first public viewing took place Wednesday 18 September 2002, launched by the Minister for Education and Training, the Hon Lynne Kosky at a reception in the Melbourne Museum.
Many of those present congratulated Ben on his courage to take part in the new program, his interest in education and commitment to achieving his best through the opportunity presented to him.
Ben believes that VCAL has offered him a better chance for the future. "I was having troubles with my schooling and didn’t know what I was going to do this year. VCAL has really helped me to get back on track," he said. "I think the program is really great," he continued. "I feel good to be able to say that I was part of the pilot (project)."
Ben is pictured celebrating his success with the workmates he has established through the VCAL program (below) and with one of his fans, John Werry, who was also present at the launch (far below).
