State Of The Art Access To Wonthaggi’s Guide ParkBass Coast Shire Council successfully applied for funding to redevelop Wonthaggi’s Guide Park using “universal access principles”. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 10th September 2001 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council successfully applied for funding to redevelop Wonthaggi’s Guide Park using "universal access principles". This will ensure all members of the community, including children and adults with disabilities or vision impairment, will be able to enjoy the park.
"Being able to access and participate in local leisure and recreation opportunities is integral to a sense of belonging and being part of a community," said Cr Miranda Sage, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council.
"The funds from Council’s successful submission to the Municipal Association of Victoria and the Department of Human Services together with a significant contribution from Council, means we will have a park that clearly demonstrates our efforts to be an inclusive community," she said.
A community steering committee, which includes members from a wide variety of local groups and services, has been working to develop a concept plan for the park. Some of the features the steering committee has been considering include:
- New wheelchair accessible BBQ facilities
- New rotunda
- Increased bench space and seating
- Sensory garden
- Fenced leash-free dog area
- Water feature
- Improved traffic flow
- Accessible pathways
- New unisex disabled toilet
- Increased parking
- Upgraded playground facilities including accessible play equipment
Draft plans of the park will be on view in all Council Customer Service Centres and the libraries throughout October, and public comment and feedback is invited. Final plans will then be drafted in November.
