Funding provided for LISCThe Latrobe Information and Support Centre (LISC) has been provided with further funding By Latrobe City Council - 2nd November 2001 - Back to News The Latrobe Information and Support Centre (LISC) has been provided with further funding from Latrobe City Council to assist its operations for the ensuing twelve months.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins said that LISC played an important role in the distribution of information to citizens and visitors on a range of issues, such as tourism information and information on recreational facilities, education and training, youth and legal issues, and referrals to appropriate service agencies.
"Council recognises the dedication made by the volunteers who make their time available to help the community through LISC. These volunteer make it their business to listen and deal with enquiries in a professional and friendly manner," Cr Jenkins said.
Latrobe Information and Support Centre Manager, Karen Metcalfe, said the information service was free, confidential, independent and community based. "We offer budget advice, tax help and can help advise on benefits, pensions and concessions. People come to us seeking advice on family and personal matters, on accommodation and health issues, even immigration issues. We are there to help, and people know they will receive impartial advice from LISC," Mrs Metcalfe said.
While most of LISC’s funding is provided by Council and Latrobe City provides the premises, LISC provides part of their ongoing funding through its Charity Christmas Card Shop.
"There are more than 25 charities such as SIDS, Red Cross, the Royal Children’s Hospital, and RVIB, whose Christmas Cards are available in stock for as little as 30cents each. It means that people can also be supporting their favourite charity when sending Christmas greetings to friends and relatives. Corporate Christmas Cards can also be ordered," Mrs Metcalfe said.
The Latrobe Information and Support Centre operates from premises at 20 Tarwin Street, Morwell, 9am-4pm Monday to Friday and can be contacted on 5134 1118.
