Upgrade to dam wall to ensure Lake Narracan’s long-term securityThe long-term security of Lake Narracan has been assured By Latrobe City Council - 20th August 2001 - Back to News The long-term security of Lake Narracan has been assured, following commitments over the future of the dam wall given by Southern Rural Water, at a recent meeting with Latrobe City Deputy Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning.
Cr Hanning said Southern Rural Water was finalising plans for an upgrade of the dam wall with a number of stakeholders and user groups, and would be announcing details of the upgrade in the very near future.
"These plans involve some temporary draining of the lake in the off-season in both 2002 and 2003 to allow the upgrade to occur. Southern Rural Water’s commitment clearly puts a number of unfounded rumours about Lake Narracan’s future to rest, and provides user groups with clear assurances on the lake’s future, which allows them to make long-term plans," Cr Hanning said.
"Southern Rural Water will be undertaking a community consultative process to determine the exact timing of the works, to ensure business and recreational needs are met and environmental concerns are addressed.
"Lake Narracan welcomes approximately 20,000 visitors per annum, who come to enjoy a picturesque location, excellent water skiing, sailing, camping, swimming and walking.
"Not only does the lake and surrounds provide citizens of Latrobe with a scenic and exciting recreational area, but Lake Narracan is a significant drawcard for visitors from further afield, particularly visitors from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It is estimated that the Lake contributes approximately $2 million annually to the local economy," Cr Hanning said.
"Council will now identify and examine opportunities that the temporary lake drainings may offer to enhance recreational facilities and the lake’s environment," Cr Hanning added.
