Crinigan Road Bushland benefits from CJP project A boundary fence in the Crinigan Road Bushland Reserve is one of the first initiatives being taken to protect and enhance the reserve for the Latrobe community. By Latrobe City Council - 28th May 2001 - Back to News The construction of a boundary fence in the Crinigan Road Bushland Reserve is one of the first initiatives being taken by the bushland’s Committee of Management to protect and enhance the reserve for the Latrobe community.
Secretary of the Crinigan Road Bushland Reserve Committee of Management, Peter Ryan, said a number of initiatives were being undertaken which would add to the local community’s pride and sense of ownership of the unique 33 hectares of natural bushland, skirting one of the most populous residential areas in the municipality.
"The current work is being undertaken by a fifteen man labour force through a Community Jobs Program (CJP) project. The team is removing some of the exotic weeds such as pines and pittosporums that have self seeded in the reserve, is installing a fence to provide protection for the Reserve, is disposing of rubbish, clearing overgrown walking tracks, and clearing some selected undergrowth to enhance fire prevention," Mr Ryan said.
"There are five kilometres of walking tracks within the Reserve’s boundaries and it’s an ideal place for a leisurely stroll among the native flora which is well utilised by native birds. One of the key elements of our management plan is to encourage more native fauna into the area, by ensuring the habitat is protected," Mr Ryan said
"Additionally, plans are afoot to install seating and signs throughout the reserve, and the Committee is keen to involve the general community in the management of the Reserve by forming a ‘Friends’ group," Mr Ryan added.
"An information day is planned for Sunday 3 June where we are holding a barbecue followed by a walk through the Reserve. We would love prospective Friends of the Crinigan Road Reserve to attend," Mr Ryan said.
The information day commences at 10am in the Multi-purpose Room located at the Crinigan Road Primary School.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said the Crinigan Road Bushland Reserve had been identified by Council as in urgent need of protection, and as a consequence through consultation with the community, a Committee of Management had been formed which had quickly established priorities and got on with the job at hand.
"This is a critical area of natural bushland, in fact it is the only area of natural bushland left that’s adjacent to a residential area of Morwell," Cr Jenkins said.
"One of the ways in which Council has been able to assist the Committee is through part funding the work being undertaken at the Reserve through our involvement with the Community Jobs Program," Cr Jenkins explained.
"This particular initiative is a partnership between Latrobe City Council and the State Government, who are assisting fifteen long term unemployed by providing training, work skills and experience and most importantly, employment. One of the key values of this program is that it provides direct benefit back to the community," Cr Jenkins said.
"In this instance it is not just the local community that benefits, but the whole of Latrobe, because reserves such as Crinigan Road are utilised by citizens throughout the municipality. Several other projects are also being undertaken through the Community Jobs Program, such as work at the Traralgon Railway Reservoir Conservation Reserve, Moe’s Botanic Gardens, and at Glendonald Park in Churchill," Cr Jenkins added.
