Working together to achieve

Trafalgar youth have created a mural that overlooks the Trafalgar skate park in partnership with Baw Baw Shire Council and the Trafalgar Community Development Association (TCDA) with funding from Regional Arts Victoria.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 17th August 2006 - Back to News

The project was initiated by the skaters who approached the TCDA for assistance according to council chief executive officer, Mr Glenn Patterson.

"This mural is owned and embraced by the people who use the skate park and they have created this wonderful artwork.

"The TCDA successfully applied to Regional Arts Victoria and also approached council for funding which we supplied.

"Significant goodwill has been created with a number of local businesses contributing financially and in kind to the project," said Mr Patterson.

The TCDA commissioned a professional graffiti artist to assist the local youth in creating the mural providing guidance and direction in design.

According to TCDA present, Fiona Beckley, people were involved from a broad cross-section of the Trafalgar community.

"Input was welcomed from anyone who had a contribution," said Ms Beckley.

"As a result, a fantastic rapport has been built between people of all ages and interest groups.

"Not only do we have a great piece of artwork but there have been wider benefits for our community," said Ms Beckley.

Trafalgar skater, Lucas Handley, was involved in instigating the project and encouraging other young people to get involved.

"I reckon it has been good to be involved with the mural because it showed us kids can do stuff if we want to and we get out there and get the support needed.

"I want to do more of this sort of thing and I’ve since been asked to join the TCDA, which I might give a go," said Mr Handley.

The Department of Victorian Communities (DVC) funds the community development position through council that facilitates the project and works with the TCDA in developing community capacity building projects.

The mural project was completed during the June school holidays.
