A great year for Latrobe says former MayorCouncillor Brendan Jenkins was elected Latrobe City Mayor for the next twelve months By Latrobe City Council - 21st March 2001 - Back to News Councillor Brendan Jenkins was elected Latrobe City Mayor for the next twelve months at Monday night’s Special Council Meeting, and outgoing Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning, was elected to the position of Deputy Mayor.
In his outgoing speech, welcoming the election of Councillor Jenkins to the Mayoral position, Cr Hanning said his own term as Mayor of Latrobe City had been the high point of his career.
“This has been a great year for the Council and the Citizens of Latrobe, and it has been a fortunate one for the Mayor,” Cr Hanning said.
“This was the year we became a City, the year of the Olympics, the year we have all achieved so much; the Ministerial Taskforce, the grant for the Latrobe Regional Gallery, the signing of the Sister City agreement with Takasago, the 300 jobs at the Telstra Call Centre. All of these achievements are the result of teamwork and no one in particular; yet to be Mayor at the announcement of those milestones has been a great privilege, and I consider myself lucky to have been in the right spot at the right time, for some of those achievements are the result of the efforts of former Mayors and Councillors,” Cr Hanning said.
“I have tried to bring to all levels of government a sense of a quest for social justice, and that is where we have had to walk a thin line indeed. This has been very difficult and has meant being critical of governments at the same time as offering them a way out. While some have misconstrued my efforts as pejorative, I have made it clear to both State and Federal governments that we are prepared to work with them and not against them. I know first-hand that with the State Government at least, there is an understanding of this objective,” Councillor Hanning said.
After thanking his wife Janine and daughter Amanda for their devoted support during his term as Mayor, the media for their fair mindedness, and CEO Penny Holloway and Council officers for their support, Councillor Hanning thanked his fellow Councillors for their confidence and support during and office which he regarded as the greatest of all privileges.
“I view my time as Mayor as ambitious with mixed success, as guided by aspirations which however misinterpreted in the eyes of others are not generic or cliched, but represent what I see as the aspirations of our wider community, and aspirations which I suspect will be seen by the incoming Mayor as aspirations worthy of continued pursuit,” Cr Hanning concluded.
