Free herbicide available for roadside weeds

Wellington Shire Council is encouraging rural landholders to apply for free herbicide and native plants as part of the Weeds for Trees program.

By Wellington Shire Council - 17th August 2006 - Back to News

The program will help to control roadside weeds by making herbicides and limited spray equipment available to individuals and groups for approved weed control on roadsides.

The program will target Blackberry, Ragwort, St Johns Wort, Patterson’s Curse, Boxthorn, Gorse and Bridal Creeper, but serious infestations of other weeds will be considered.

"Weeds like Bridal Creeper are emerging in the shire and need to be controlled before the problem becomes too big" said Annie Lamb, Wellington Shire Council’s Weed Education Officer.

"If everyone works together, we can rid roadsides of weeds" she said.

Native plants will be made available to those participating in the program later in the year.

The Weeds for Trees initiative is a partnership between Wellington Shire Council, the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and Landcare. The program is part of the Wellington Weed Free project which is funded by the Victorian Government’s Tackling Weeds on Private Land Initiative – Local Government Weed Management Grant Program.

"Since the program’s inception in 2001, over 1400km of roadsides have been cleared of weeds and over 57,000 native trees have been planted.

"This is an enormous contribution towards strengthening biodiversity across the Wellington Shire area. This year, there will be focus on closing the gaps and those landholders who have never applied for grants are encouraged to do so" said Ms Lamb.

Application forms for the 2006 round of funding will be distributed to eligible rural landholders during July and will be available on the shire’s website.
