Road Side Inspection Reveals Undersized Bream Fisheries Officers conducting a routine vehicle interception in the Lakes Entrance area over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend discovered a number of bream under the minimum legal size. By Department of Primary Industries - 16th June 2005 - Back to News It will be alleged that Fisheries Officers conducted a search of the vehicle and vessel and located 44 undersized Black bream in the front of the vessel.
The bream ranged from 11cm to 22 cm in size. This is significantly under the minimum size requirement of 28cm for Gippsland Lakes and 26cm for all other Victorian waters.
Peter Courtney, Gippsland Operations Manager for Fisheries Victoria said the Black bream population in the Gippsland Lakes is suffering from poor recruitment due to the current environmental conditions.
"The illegal harvest of small bream removes them from the population before they have a opportunity to spawn."
"This result demonstrates that Fisheries Victoria is committed to minimising the illegal harvest of Black bream in the Gippsland Lakes," Mr Courtney said.
The alleged offender is expected to be charged on summons at a later date.
Mr Courtney said that Fisheries Victoria actively conducts vehicle interceptions on a day to day basis as an effective tool in fisheries compliance.
Members of the public who observe any apparent illegal fishing activity in the Gippsland Lakes are reminded to call 13 FISH (133 474) at any time of day, seven days a week.
