Insight Into World Business For Local Small Business In what will be a first of its type, owners and operators of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) are invited to an evening symposium on Wednesday 14 February By Latrobe City - 7th February 2007 - Back to News aimed at highlighting and providing an insight into the world of business in Italy, India and China.
To be hosted by Latrobe City’s Economic Development Unit, the ‘Small Business World Symposium’ will feature three key speakers who will give an overview of SMEs in three of the world’s emerging economies.
Latrobe City’s acting manager economic development, Leo Billington, said that for many, the world of small business in Australia seems to be crowded with a wide range of issues which can seem all too daunting.
"It is often perceived that a wall of regulatory requirements actually prevents a more creative approach to doing business and hampers varying levels of entrepreneurship and initiative," Mr Billington said.
"Therefore, it is perhaps worthwhile to look outside our local world and compare our situation to other countries. It could be that what we confront is not too bad after all. Alternatively, it could be that SMEs overseas have it a lot easier. Maybe there are reservations about how business operates overseas to maximise market opportunities. We can always learn from others.
"At this symposium, speakers will discuss business for SMEs in three countries; Italy, India and China. The three countries have been chosen because of the heightened level of interest and curiosity about them locally, and in fact across Australia as well. Our three guest speakers will speak with enthusiasm and candour about the economies and cultures of these countries which they know intimately.
"Dr Bruno Mascitelli from Swinburne University is a specialist lecturer in European and international business. Previously with Austrade in Milan, Dr Mascitelli knows all about Italy and is a regular visitor to his home country, therefore keeping up to date with the business environment.
"Dr Mona Chung from Monash University Clayton Campus specialises in cross-cultural business studies and consulting. Dr Chung has extensive experience in establishing business links in China.
"Our third guest speaker, Prabodh Malhotra, a research scholar from the Victoria University in Melbourne, is completing his doctoral studies in economics and specialises in international marketing and business strategies," Mr Billington explained.
"The three speakers will each provide an insight into their respective homeland countries and then answer questions in what promises to be a timely, relevant occasion with plenty of opportunities to network.
"Latrobe City is extremely fortunate to secure the three speakers all of whom are friends, having studied with each other on various occasions. The rapport between them is vibrant and this will make the symposium most enjoyable. Moreover, it is a unique event, ideally suited to commence our year of business workshops. This will be a busy year and we will celebrate the onset of the year in this way," Mr Billington added.
The ‘Small Business World Symposium’ will be held at the Italian Australian Sporting and Social Club of Gippsland, Princes Drive, Morwell. The evening commences at 5.30 pm for 6pm and refreshments will be available courtesy of Latrobe City Council.
Bookings are essential for catering purposes. Those wishing to attend should contact Stacey Bond at Latrobe City on 5128 5416 by 9am, Tuesday 13 February. For further information please contact Leo Billington, telephone 0407 541 258.
