Information Session On Princes Freeway Re-Opening

Reopen Gippsland Freeway

Reopen Gippsland Freeway

An information session for the community to hear more about the work that has taken place to re-open the Princes Freeway at Morwell and to address local land movement issues will be held next Friday 19th August.

By Russel Northe - 12th August 2011 - Back to News

Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the meeting to be held at the Morwell Bowling Club followed the recent announcement by the State Government the freeway would re-open in time for the September school holidays, weather permitting.

"This closure has had a significant impact on the local community, including the business community and I know many people are interested in understanding what work has been done and what needs to be done in the future to ensure this important stretch of road is re-opened," Mr Northe said.

Community members will have the opportunity to talk to senior representatives from Victoria Police, the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and VicRoads as well as other agencies and organisations involved, including International Power Hazelwood and Latrobe City Council.

There will be information stalls and displays set up for people to find out more about the situation and the works being undertaken to get the road re-opened.

"This has been a unique and difficult situation that numerous agencies have had to deal with and it’s important the community has up-to-date information on what is being done to reopen the freeway," Mr Northe said.

The stretch of freeway near Morwell has been closed since 10 February this year when heavy rain led to the creation of sinkholes and ground movement in the area.

VicRoads has already started works on lining a 300 metre section of the central median along the currently closed section of the freeway and other strengthening works including injecting grout into soft areas underground.

Mr Northe said around the clock monitoring of ground movement would continue even after works were completed and the road was reopened.

"It’s wonderful news that the Princes Freeway is due to re-open to traffic in September and I’m sure road users are looking forward to again travelling on that stretch of freeway and cutting down their travel time."

Mr Northe said senior officials would be on hand to answer any questions from the community at the information session which will be held at the Morwell Bowling Club, 52 Hazelwood Road, Morwell from 3 to 6pm on Friday 19th August.

"I encourage people to drop into the bowling club any time after 3pm and before 6pm to find out all they need about the works and the plans for re-opening," Mr Northe said.
