and Airfield Road, west of Traralgon.

"There are around 23,000 vehicles passing through this section of the Princes Highway each day, and around 2,000 that use Airfield Road to access places like the hospital, motel, airport and residential properties on the west side of Traralgon" Mr Northe said.

"This is a very busy intersection with lots of different turning movements involved, which has meant a number of crashes in past years."

Mr Northe said figures from 2003 to the end of 2010 show there have been eight crashes recorded where someone was injured. Five of those crashes involved serious injuries.

"Once this project is finished, there will be more control over traffic turning movements, through installing traffic lights and changing the arrangement of turning lanes onto Airfield Road, onto the highway and into Century Inn.

"To further boost safety here, the nearby 80km/h speed zone will be extended for west-bound traffic approaching the intersection.

"There’ll also be improvements for pedestrians too," Mr Northe said.

"There are also many people passing through this area on foot to get to places like the hospital, caravan park, bus stops and motel so there’ll be pedestrian crossing facilities at the traffic lights, footpaths to the bus stops and improvements to existing streetlighting.

"Two new bus shelters will also be built as part of this project" Mr Northe said.

The project is expected to take around three months to complete.
