By Wellington Shire Council - 4th June 2002 - Back to News Wellington’s residents can glean the latest information on biotechnology from a panel of experts at a community forum next week.
Hosted by Wellington Council, the forum will discuss the opportunities and challenges posted by the use and regulation of gene technology.
Development Services Manager Steven Dickson said Council organised the forum to provide shire residents with an overview of the biotechnology industry.
"This emerging technology has the potential to impact upon all of us, whether through production of genetically modified crops, stem cell research, or animal research.
"The government has a stated aim that Victoria will be recognised as one of the world’s top five biotechnology locations by 2010. This forum will give us the opportunity to gain first-hand information from the experts who will shape the development of this industry in the State."
Guest speakers include:
Ellen Kittson Manager of the Department of Human Services’ Biotechnology Safety and Ethics Unit, who will talk on Victoria’s participation in the National Regulatory Framework for gene technology.
Dr Chris Langford Director of the Victorian Institute of Animal Science, who give an overview of the institute’s research into gene technology.
Dr Bill Pring Member of the coordinating committee for Psychiatry, Australian Medical Association (Federal), who will speak on the AMA’s policy position on genetically modified foods and labelling.
Paula Fitzgerald Executive Manager of Agrifood Awareness Australia, who will give an overview of genetically modified crop developments in Australia.
The forum will be held on Wednesday 19 June in the Wellington Room at the Port of Sale Civic Centre from 6pm – 9pm.
