Help Christmas card recycling effort

Wellington Shire residents are being encouraged to participate in a nationwide Christmas card recycling effort now underway – providing an ideal opportunity to dispose of no-longer needed greeting cards in an environmentally-friendly manner.

The Cards 4 Planet Ark initiative is being coordinated by the Planet Ark environmental group and is supported by a number of Councils across Australia, including Wellington Shire.

Through to the end of January greeting cards can be left in dedicated recycling bins in the Coles supermarket in Gippsland Centre, Sale, or at local Australia Post outlets.

Alternatively residents can pick up a postage-paid recycling envelope from a participating Australia Post store (while stocks last), place the cards inside and post it free at any post box.

Every type of greeting card and envelope will be accepted.

In the ten years since Planet Ark introduced the campaign, 500 million cards have been recycled. They are returned to the supermarket shelf as new products like SAFE-branded paper and recycled cartonboard packaging. This cartonboard is used for everyday items like breakfast cereal packs – requiring fewer resources than similar products created from virgin materials.

Said Wellington’s acting Chief Executive Officer Ralf Kastan: "We are pleased to lend our support to this very worthy initiative and would encourage residents who haven’t already disposed of their Christmas cards to take up this opportunity to help the environment and have them recycled."
