Call before you cut

Wellington Shire Council is reminding members of the public to call before cutting, trimming or clearing native vegetation.

By Wellington Shire Council - 3rd July 2006 - Back to News

Steven Dickson, Director Community and Development for Wellington Shire Council said that native vegetation is an important environmental feature of the Wellington Shire.

"Native vegetation is important for many reasons, it provides habitat for wildlife and birds, it also assists to prevent erosion and reduce salinity".

"It is not just trees, it also includes the small trees, shrubs, grasses and herbs" said Mr Dickson.

Planning Permits are required to lop trees, or remove native shrubs and understorey vegetation on private land and roadsides.

Mr Dickson said these requirements only applied to native vegetation and Council uses common sense in responding to requests.

"Obviously we do not want to interfere with people gardening, but where there is land clearing or cutting back significant trees people do need to check, and possibly apply for a permit.

"Restrictions largely apply to naturally occurring vegetation in rural areas," said Mr Dickson.

"There are some exemptions for plantations or seeded pastures but a permit is generally required to remove vegetation for construction of centre pivots, fire breaks and fences.

"Penalties can be quite severe for illegal clearing or damage to native vegetation, and a simple phone call to our planning department could save a lot of heartache later on. They can quickly tell you whether or not you will need a permit.

"We are simply asking people to ‘Call Before You Cut’ if they are unsure and we will assist them," said Mr Dickson.
