The exhibition explores personal, social and clinical dimensions of depression and mania through the artworks of those suffering from these conditions.

Sherryn Vardy, acting Curator at Latrobe Regional Gallery, said the Cunningham Dax Collection of Psychiatric Art is a world-renowned collection of works by people with mental illness assembled by Dr Eric Cunningham Dax over the past 50 years for the purposes of education and research.

"Dr Dax found that when his patients returned to the community, they encountered discrimination and decided to use their artworks to educate the general community about mental illness. It is hoped that by demystifying mental illness society will respond with less fear and greater understanding and compassion," Ms Vardy explained.

"The 44 works on paper and canvas selected highlight the subjective experiences of these extreme mood states. In addition, there are 10 storyboards which accompany the works which explain in lay terms aspects of depression and mania as well as treatment and recovery.

"The exhibition does not focus only on the "gloomy" side of mental illness. Works showing recoveries from these pathological states are included and, most importantly, many of these works demonstrate the creativity of people who have mental illness," Ms Vardy concluded.

Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700. Entry is free.
