Risky Business

Bass Coast Shire Council has developed a Risk Management Kit for not-for-profit organisations to assist them in identifying and assessing potential risks and implementing a management plan.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 15th July 2005 - Back to News

Council’s Arts and Leisure Coordinator, Jenny Churchill, says risk is an important issue for all organisations including not-for-profit organisations, such as clubs and community groups.

"These organisations face a variety of risks every day, which can be anything from claims relating to sporting accidents to financial risk or fraud.

"Council has recognised the difficulty faced by these groups due to limited funds and access to up-to-date information and produced a Risk Management and Your Not-For-Profit Organisation kit.

"70 local not-for-profit organisations attended the launch and the kit has been extremely well-received so far," said Ms Churchill.

The free kit aims to help not-for-profit organisations identify and analyse the likelihood and consequences of specific risks and the processes to put in place to effectively manage such risks.

"Improving efficiency in this area will not only help prevent breakdowns and accidents, but will help minimise insurance premiums so that these groups may use their funds elsewhere," continued Ms Churchill.

The Risk Management kit tools include guidelines, checklists and information on such issues as Insurance, Emergency Evacuation, Fall Prevention, Chemical Use, Cyclic Maintenance and Australian Standards

A copy of the "Good Access is Good Business" handbook is also included to assist Committee of Management members better understand their obligation under the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act (1992) in relation to accessibility for all people.

Not-for-profit groups in the Bass Coast Shire can contact Council on (03) 5671 2211 or (03) 5951 3311 for their free copy.
