Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy

Rehabilitation of Latrobe Valley’s brown coal mines announced.

Today the State Government has announced that the rehabilitation of Latrobe Valley’s brown coal mines will be steered through the creation of a new authority, and a strategy that will guide future rehabilitation planning and works.

The Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority, replaces the existing office of the Latrobe Valley Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner and subsequently will be based in Morwell at the Latrobe Valley GovHub.

The Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy (LVRRS) final report released today is an important document for the Latrobe Valley community.

Many individuals, businesses and organisations had provided feedback during the draft report phase with a variety of ideas, initiatives and views expressed.

In my submission to the LVRRS I had flagged a number of key concerns and questions including:

• That outside of a pit-lake option, no other options have been actively considered
• Where will the necessary water be obtained from to fill the mine voids, and what impact will this have upon Gippsland farmers and irrigators?
• What are the timeframes involved for filling the mines with water?
• What does the final plan look like and, what recreational or other opportunities will the local community benefit from, and any associated timelines?
