Aquatics Committee And Council On Their First Lap

A joint working group has begun to meet regularly to examine the aquatic needs of Phillip Island.

By Bass Coast - 27th January 2012 - Back to News

Members of the Phillip Island Aquatic Centre Fund (PIACF) and Bass Coast Shire Council have been meeting regularly since September last year.

Bass Coast Shire Council Director of Community and Economic Development, Steven Piasente, said that at the 27 July 2011 Council meeting, Councillors resolved to form a joint working group for this purpose. "At this initial stage the group has shared information and discussed views on aquatic needs for the future.

"Bass Coast is experiencing population growth, which is anticipated to continue. This will lead to an increased demand for upgraded and new facilities," said Mr Piasente.

"Our group discussion is focused on the needs for Phillip Island, and we are looking at this in a broader context as well. This includes examining views on what is required to meet future aquatic needs in the region and the standards and models of current and future aquatic facilities.

"Seeking external funding is also on the agenda, with the group discussing several future funding opportunities."

The formation of a working group with selected representatives is one of the ways Council engages with the Phillip Island community. A working group is able to examine specific community need and work towards a sustainable solution over a period of time.

"Through joining together and by sharing information Council and the PIACF are in a stronger position to work toward improving aquatic facilites for the Phillip Island community," Mr Piasente said.

The working group consists of:

Bass Coast Shire Council Representatives
Cr Veronica Dowman (Mayor), Cr Peter Paul, Cr John Duscher, Community and Economic Development Director - Steven Piasente, Arts and Leisure Manager - Jenny Churchill, Recreation Planner - Ella Angarane

Phillip Island Aquatic Centre Fund Representatives
Don Turner, Kristine Miles, Neil Ramsay, Nicola Tregear, Phil Dixon and Simon Manning

The working group will continue meeting during 2012 and will provide updated reports to Council every three months.
