Local athlete makes Malta’s Commonwealth Games teamMorwell resident Rebecca Madyson will represent Malta at the Commonwealth Games next year, competing in the Women’s Olympic Trap shooting event in Lilydale. By City of Latrobe - 22nd March 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that residents of Latrobe, particularly the large Maltese community, would be keen to follow Rebecca’s progress as Malta was Council’s adopted country for the Games.
"Although Rebecca was born in Australia, her family is Maltese and she is proud to be representing the country of her heritage at this top level event. In fact, Rebecca is the first female representative for Malta in this event, a great achievement," Cr Lougheed said.
Ms Madyson was at work when the news about her selection for Malta came through.
"My partner rang me at work to tell me that I had been selected for the Commonwealth Games. I was jumping up and down, shouting. I felt so proud and so happy," Ms Madyson recalled.
Cr Lougheed added that Rebecca had been shooting for about 8 years, following in her father’s footsteps.
"Her chosen event means that she has to travel frequently to Melbourne, Frankston and Werribee for competition and in May she will be flying out to Malta for a three month stay in order to compete in various top flight competitions including the World Championships and world cup events," Cr Lougheed explained.
"Latrobe City wishes Rebecca good luck on her travels to Malta and shall be keenly following her progress when the Commonwealth Games commence in March 2006," Cr Lougheed concluded.
