Minister approves rezoning of Maffra

Wellington Shire Council has received approval from the Planning Minister to implement significant amendments to its planning scheme for Maffra - guiding future housing development in the town.

By Wellington Shire Council - 25th February 2005 - Back to News

Importantly, the minister agreed 100% with the Council’s proposed amendments (known collectively as C20), that had been put out to the local community for extensive consultation – deciding not to follow differing recommendations submitted by an independent panel set up by his department.

The amendments, which have now been adopted into the council’s Wellington Planning Scheme, will guide development in Maffra for the next 15 years and include rezoning of some areas to address the demand for additional housing.

Said Wellington’s Director of Community and Economic Development, Steven Dickson: "This is a very welcome and positive outcome for the local community as a whole, providing major housing development benefits for Maffra and helping with its future growth and economic prosperity.

"It has taken many months to conclude the planning amendment process, due to the complex legislative planning procedures that we are duty bound to follow, including the appointment of the independent panel to review our proposed amendments.

"We are delighted that the council’s position has now been vindicated by the Minister. Anything less, such as going with the panel’s recommendations, could have greatly hampered Maffra’s future."
