Grand Prix Safety Tips

The 2006 GMC Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix is just around the corner.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 17th August 2006 - Back to News

Taking place from 15 – 17 September rather than the traditional October time slot, this is the 10th consecutive running of the event at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.

In addition to the program of races at the circuit, many residents and visitors are looking forward to a number of spectacles off the track.

The Barry Sheene Memorial Ride from Bairnsdale to Phillip Island will take place on Thursday 14 September. This is the fourth year the Ride has taken place and organisers are expecting in excess of 900 riders to take part.

On Saturday 16 September, the traditional morning ride from Cranbourne is again expected to attract large numbers of riders.

Council’s Special Events Coordinator Frank Angarane said there was a lot of community interest in these events.

"It’s great that people are so enthusiastic about these rides," said Mr Angarane.

"We encourage people to enjoy the spectacle and come out to support the riders.

"But we also want to ensure that these events don’t compromise community safety.

Mr Angarane said there were important safety measures that everyone needed to be aware of:

  • Spectactors need to stay well clear of the roadway
  • Spectators should not try to make physical contact with riders i.e. high fives, slapping hands with passing bikes etc
  • Young children must be supervised near roads
  • No flags or banners to be projected too close to the road way
  • Spectators should not encourage riders to ride in an unsafe manner.

"These rides are fantastic spectacles which have a very high level of community involvement," said Mr Angarane.

"However, it would be terrible if a spectactor or rider got hurt.

"We really urge everyone to take on board the safety recommendations so that the rides run smoothly.

"We want everyone to have a great day and that means everyone having a safe day as well."

Mr Angarane said it would be good for people to keep the safety measures in mind throughout the the Grand Prix weekend as there would be increased traffic, particularly as the crowds arrived at and left the Grand Prix circuit.

"Be aware of the extra traffic on our roads, enjoy the event but don’t compromise your safety," urged Mr Angarane.
