Portable toilet trial - Willow Park

Wellington Shire Council is supporting a bid to trial a portable toilet system at Rosedale’s Willow Park following strong requests from the local community.

By Wellington Shire Council - 23rd August 2005 - Back to News

The Council last week agreed to allow an application to be made for the portable facility to be installed at the park for a trial period until February, 2006.

The trial will help real data to be compiled regarding usage and whether the facility should be made permanent.

Members of the Willow Park Advisory Committee recently came up with the proposal.

Wellington Councillor Darren McCubbin said: "The toilet facility will be completely self-contained and totally secured.

"It appears the committee was able to obtain an extremely good deal with a Gippsland supplier and it can proceed at no cost to council or ratepayers."

Cr McCubbin said he was pleased the council and the community had been able to agree on the trial.

"Council is always interested in improving its public toilets and public facilities and this is a ‘win win’ situation for everyone concerned. We will trial it and see how it goes."

Willow Park Advisory Committee member Bruce Lobley welcomed the council’s decision.

Mr Lobley said: "We are certainly happy with the support from the council and the local community.

"The community has agreed to pay for the trial through fundraising and donations – it really shows just how genuine we are and that we are willing to put our money where our mouths are.

"This trial is a very important stepping stone because it will enable us to monitor the usage and get some facts and figures together."

Mr Lobley said there was a real need for the facility at the park.

"There are a number of local community groups who want to hold fishing competitions and family picnics in the park but they can’t because there are no toilet facilities.

"Then of course there is always the holiday tourist traffic – a lot of people like to buy some food in Rosedale and go down to the park and eat it on the banks of the Latrobe River. A lot of tourists also park their campervans there overnight during the holiday season."

The committee is expected to liaise with the Council this month to discuss the installation of the facility.

Mr Lobley said he was optimistic it would be operating before the start of the September school holidays.
