Budget process delayed awaiting Taskforce report

Latrobe City Council has deferred the formal preparation and adoption process for the 2001/2002 budget

By Latrobe City Council - 6th June 2001 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council has deferred the formal preparation and adoption process for the 2001/2002 budget, pending the imminent release of the Latrobe Valley Ministerial Taskforce report.

Acting Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, explained that while the 2001/2002 budget had been drafted and was awaiting formal Council approval to be released for public comment and formal submissions, it made sense to defer the formal process pending the outcome of the Taskforce report.

"We obviously cannot pre-empt what is in the Taskforce report, but it may include a requirement for Council to make a financial contribution to one or more projects primarily funded by the State. In that case, adjustments within the framework of our budget will need to be made," Mr Buckley said.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said that Council was keen to commence the public consultation process for the draft budget which will include a number of new initiatives and an increase in the Capital Works Program, whilst maintaining the adopted debt management strategy.

"We want to ensure that, if priorities need to be rearranged to accommodate the outcomes of the taskforce, we are in a position to make those changes," Cr Jenkins said.

Highlights of the budget are likely to include a greater commitment to employment programs such as the community jobs program, the establishment and operation of community service centres for use by non-profit local community groups, a renewed focus on marketing and economic development, and the continuation of the Community Minor Capital Grants program. An overall rate increase equal to CPI (6%) is also likely.
