Reconciliation Barbecue to be held Wednesday

Latrobe City Council will be having a community barbecue at the Town Common in Morwell

By Latrobe City Council - 27th May 2002 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council, in conjunction with the local Aboriginal community, will be having a community barbecue at the Town Common in Morwell on Wednesday 29 May 2002, from 11am to 2pm.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins said that it was important that Latrobe City Council recognised and acknowledged the Briaikaulung people as the traditional owners of the land that constitutes Latrobe City.

"We are trying to reflect Council’s commitment to reconciliation and this barbecue, along with the flag raising ceremony in Traralgon on Monday, are just two of the various civic structures and activities that have been organised," Cr Jenkins explained.

"We invite all Latrobe citizens to come along, as reconciliation cannot work without the participation of individuals, communities, business sectors, non-government agencies and the Australian community," Cr Jenkins said.

Latrobe City’s Employment Development Officer, Joanne Brunt said that reconciliation was about people getting along together no matter who they are or where they come from.

"In our City, we want to promote the understanding and respect of different cultures and backgrounds of people and groups in our municipality, and in society as a whole," Ms Brunt said.

"Reconciliation has become a widely-respected term, describing the process of developing better relations between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In Latrobe City we have a large indigenous population and by celebrating Reconciliation Week we are appealing to an extensive cross section of Australians who are responding positively to it and its specific meaning," Ms Brunt concluded.
