By Latrobe City Council - 17th December 2003 - Back to News Participants in a Crazy Patchwork class held at the refurbished Traralgon East Hall have gone all out to catch Santa’s eye this Christmas by designing and making Christmas stockings in colourful and imaginative designs, using their talents with a variety of materials and fabrics.
The Traralgon Neighbourhood Learning House group has been working on the stockings every Thursday since October with the intention of brightening up the homes of their family and friends with vibrantly coloured stockings and adding extra Christmas cheer.
Class tutor, Linda Barraclough, said that everyone in the class who made a stocking had fun working on the project and that it has also helped them to develop their skills, which they will put to use in next year’s classes.
"We had absolutely excellent results from the women who made the stockings, and their work was very inspiring," Ms Barraclough said.
"The women in the group have a range of skills. Some are very experienced embroiderers and sewers, but no matter what their level of skill, all have had a lot of fun. We are really looking forward to next year’s program too."
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, complemented the participants on their craft.
"These classes are in fact one of the benefits of the Neighbourhood Renewal Project. It’s a real plus for the community that there are programs such as these classes which allow people to develop and learn skills which they will keep for life," Cr Middlemiss said.
Ms Barraclough said the Crazy Patchwork classes will continue running in 2004 along with other classes such as Belly Dancing, Mosaics and Machine Patchwork.
"An even fuller and more exciting program is developing for 2004 with new offerings such as Beginner’s Tatting, which is a form of lace making," Ms Barraclough said.
For further information on the program at Traralgon East, and at the House at 61 Breed Street, phone Jenny or Sandy on 5174 6199.
