"What Can I Do"

After many months of planning, fundraising, and sheer hard work, the community of Franklin Park officially celebrated the opening of the children’s play area, known as Explorers Park, on Saturday 10 September.

By Latrobe City Council - 13th September 2005 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed unveiled a plaque and expressed his pleasure at seeing a community work together to achieve something for future generations to take pride in.

"The Franklin Street Community Park Action Group has been working hard since April last year to plan, build and open this play area for their children. They have pooled their resources, skills, knowledge and time to create an area where families can enjoy the amenity of the Franklin Park area.

"Whilst the developer did leave some funds for the construction of a children’s playground, donations through Council’s Community Grants program, along with money, goods and services given by local businesses ensured that the project could be completed. The community group should be congratulated on their dedication and efforts," Cr Lougheed said.

Cr Lisa Proctor echoed the mayor’s sentiments and said that the community could take pride in its commitment to their families’ welfare.

"By working together with Council and local organisations, the people of Franklin Park now have their own community playground to enjoy. Many people came out on Saturday to enjoy the festivities, with a barbecue, jumping castle and an appearance by KoKo the clown," Cr Proctor added.

"The environment that has been created is very family friendly with a playground, walking paths, lighting, feature walls, seating, landscaping and trees. In future, a second stage of development will see walking paths and landscaping further into the back of the park," Cr Proctor concluded.
