Call for tsunami concert entertainers and volunteersEntertainers, volunteers and businesses are being called on to donate their talent, time and product to help stage the ‘Big Wave Concert – tsunami appeal’ being held at Victory Park Traralgon on Australia Day. By Latrobe Shire Council - 12th January 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said the response so far to the concept of a fund raising concert for the tsunami relief effort had been overwhelming.
"Offers of assistance have been pouring in from across the municipality and even beyond," Cr Lougheed said.
"There have been offers for the free loan of much of the equipment needed to stage the concert, promotional assistance, support with security, donations of food for catering purposes and the donation of goods that can be auctioned as a fundraiser. To date, between them, the Lions clubs, Apex clubs and Rotary clubs have mustered some 350 volunteers," Cr Lougheed said.
"The Big Wave Concert – Tsunami Appeal is being facilitated by the Lions Club of Traralgon Inc, Latrobe City Council, and concerned members of the Latrobe community. The committee has now officially launched its appeal for volunteers."
Committee member and local performer, Alan Wood, said a top priority was the need to secure the donated services of entertainers, whether they be rock bands, jazz musicians, rhythm and blues artists, folk groups, choirs, dancers or individual singers and performers.
"There is a great deal of talent here in the Latrobe Valley and across Gippsland and we need those people to step forward in a good cause," Mr Wood said.
Events Latrobe Coordinator, Janiene Ayre, said an expression of interest form for entertainers, volunteers and businesses who can contribute to the Big Wave Concert, is being published in the Latrobe Valley Express on 13 and 17 January, and is now available online from Latrobe City’s website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.
"Please indicate expressions of volunteer support for the appeal concert by completing the form by Thursday 20 January and returning it to ‘The Events Latrobe Team’, PO Box 345 Traralgon 3844; or by faxing it to Council on 5128 5672; emailing it to janieneay@latrobe.vic.gov.au or wendyhr@latrobe.vic.gov.au; or delivering the completed form to any of Councils service centres in Moe, Morwell or Traralgon."
Cr Lougheed added that the world response to the emergency in Asia had been quite stunning, and rightly so, as the death toll continued to rise and the extent of both the shorter and longer term effects of the tsunami destruction became increasingly apparent.
"It is also quite obvious that the people of our own region have been deeply moved by the plight of those affected by the earthquake and tsunami and want to do all they can to help relief agencies deliver their vital work," Cr Lougheed concluded.
Further information on ‘The Big Wave Concert – Tsunami Appeal’ is available from Janiene Ayre, telephone 5128 5646; or Wendy Hrynyszyn, telephone 5128 5618.
