Fig Tree To Remain Centrepiece Of Metung DevelopmentMetung’s much-loved Moreton Bay Fig tree will remain the centrepiece of a beautification plan for the centre of the popular Gippsland Lakes tourist village. By East Gippsland Shire Council - 19th April 2005 - Back to News Regarded by horticultural experts as being in need of urgent remedial attention, the tree will not only receive the needed treatment, but will dominate the redeveloped public space in Kurnai Avenue known as the "village green."
The redevelopment will cost $110,000 with funds being equally provided by the East Gippsland Shire Council and the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development. Work will start in May and is expected to be finished by the end of June.
The ‘fig’ will be watered from an underground source the new landscape design will make a point of ‘integrating’ the popular space with the foreshore and public jetty through the use of paved walkways.
Gently sloped corduroy timber ramps will also link the walkways to both Kurnai Avenue carriageways.
New seats, bollards, lighting, litter bins and more than 350 shrubs will also be added to the area the lawns of which will receive a new layer of topsoil.
East Gippsland Shire Council CEO Steve Kozlowski said that the redevelopment would provide a further enhancement to one of the most attractive destinations around the Gippsland Lakes.
"Metung is already regarded by locals and tourist as being a very special place and this re-development of its centrepiece will add even further to the township’s charm.
