World-renowned glass artist makes local debut at GalleryA retrospective by Tony Hanning, a major figure in the history of Australian glass, will be officially opened at 6pm at the Latrobe Regional Gallery this Friday 29 September 2006, and will continue until November 12. By Latrobe City Council - 28th September 2006 - Back to News The exhibition, celebrating 25 years since Hanning’s first exhibition as a glass artist, will be opened by Robin Wallace-Crabbe, writer, painter and former lecturer at Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, Monash University.
In spite of an established international reputation in his field, and being a local boy, this is Tony Hanning’s first exhibition at the Latrobe Regional Gallery. The exhibition showcases two and three-dimensional media and includes glass pieces dating from 1980 to the present day, as well as drawings and photographs which have informed the work. Sourced from both private and public collections, more than thirty pieces of his glass will be shown.
Working with cameo glass, a technique where double or triple overlays of glass are sandblasted and engraved to alter the pictorial space and reveal layers of colour beneath. In his early works, Hanning used imagery of Australian flora and fauna. Recently, in more complex works, he has drawn upon allegorical themes, employing surreal imagery of cityscapes and landscape as a background to visual puns and riddles.
An artist floor talk with Tony Hanning takes place at the Gallery on Wednesday 4 October 2006. Visitors are invited to join Tony as he looks back over the past 25 years and discusses the journey he has made as an artist, from his early pieces through to his more recent and complex works.
Coffee and Tea will be held from 10.30am, followed by the floor talk which is set to start at 11am. The cost of attendance is $5 general public, $3 concession and free for Gallery Friends members.
Currently completing a PhD at Monash University, Tony Hanning has exhibited widely in Australia and overseas, has won various awards such as a New Work Grant from the Australia Council in 2002 and is a former mayor of Latrobe City.
Tony Hanning’s work is represented in several collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, in Melbourne; National Gallery of Australia, in Canberra; and at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. ‘Tony Hanning-A retrospective looking back over 25 years’ is supported by Kirra Galleries Melbourne and Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, Monash University.
Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays.
