Bills, Bells And Ballots Exhibition Here In AugustA multimedia exhibition that takes visitors on an entertaining walk through the history and role of the Victoria Parliament will open to the public at the Bairnsdale Art Gallery, Nicholson St on Monday, 14 August. By East Gippsland Shire Council - 9th August 2006 - Back to News Called Bills, Bells and Ballots – 150 years of Victoria’s Parliament, the traveling exhibition starts with how Victoria began as a sheep run only to become the richest self-governing colony of the British Empire in just 20 years.
The exhibition also takes an historical and modern look at how the Parliament plays an important role in Victoria today.
East Gippsland Mayor Cr Jane Rowe said Items rarely seen outside of Parliament House formed part of the exhibition including the current Speaker’s chair and Menzies’ briefcase.
"Unfortunately, we’re told that Legislative Assembly mace, missing since 1891, still remains a mystery," she said.
Cr Rowe said the exhibition was a chance learn about the colourful Parliamentary characters who have left an indelible mark in the history books as well as what democracy means to our community.
"It also answers fascinating questions such as how many high teas are served in the parliamentary dining room each year and the name of the famous tennis player who used Parliament’s grass tennis court to practice for the Australian Open," Cr Rowe said.
The State-wide exhibition has so far visited six regional centres, covered more than 1200 kilometres and more than 1800 students have so far participated in the structured educational tours.
Admission to the exhibition that will remain at the gallery until 1 September is free.
Bills, Bells and Ballots – 150 years of Victoria’s Parliament will be Officially Opened by President of the Legislative Council, Monica Gould Friday 11 August.
