Local Schools Lead The Fight Against Global Warming

Bass Coast Shire Council is helping local schools fight global warming.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th May 2007 - Back to News

The Council is working with Cowes Primary School and Newhaven College to help them undertake energy audits and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions as part of the Planet Savers program.

The Western Port Greenhouse Alliance, Bass Coast Landcare, CERES, Sunrise Energy Management and the Energy Doctor are also involved in the project.

Council’s Environmental Project Officer, Clare Landry said there has been growing community concern for global warming.

"These proactive schools have taken the lead to reduce their impact on the climate.

"The two schools have been undertaking energy audits to identify where they can reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the school and are currently in the process of implementing the actions," informed Ms Landry.

Funding for the program has been made available through the Australian Greenhouse Office and Bass Coast Shire Council.

Head of Year 9 Campus at Newhaven College, Glenn Mancer said: "It is not a question of whether our school should be involved, it is imperative given the threat of climate change that schools get involved.

"We should play a role in reducing emissions and educate the future generation on how to behave in a way that limits our contribution to global warming."

Sue Becker, Principal of Cowes Primary School said: "The program is a fantastic initiative that has involved the whole school community – students, teachers and parents in identifying and then implementing actions to reduce emissions"

Examples of the projects the schools have undertaken to reduce emissions include:

  • Completing an energy audit;
  • Switching of needless lights, computers and other appliances;
  • Replacing lights with compact fluorescents;
  • Installing timers on computers and appliances to switch off automatically;
  • Reduced heating / cooling energy use by more efficient use of fans and windows; and
  • Implementing a Schools Environmental Tracking System to track the schools energy consumption and environmental performance.
