The Committee appointed to review the submissions includes Councillors and representatives from the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Heritage Victoria and local historical societies.

Bass Coast Chief Executive Officer said that Maggie Baron from Baron Planning Projects had been appointed as an independent chair for the Committee.

"Maggie brings a vast amount of knowledge from her work as a planning consultant and her days with Heritage Victoria", said Mr Bawden.

"Her experience sitting on planning panels hearing heritage matters will be invaluable.

"The first meeting is already taking place, and further sessions have been scheduled over the coming weeks."

The appointment of the Review Committee came about as a result of a commitment made by Council at the meeting on 7 February to facililate the review process as fairly and quickly as possible.

238 submissions have been received in response to the 874 properties affected by the proposed overlays.

The role of the panel is an advisory one. The panel will review every submission and report back to Council. This report will be presented at the Council Meeting on 18 April.

A copy of the Review Committee’s terms of reference is available by contacting the Strategic Planning Department.

Mr Bawden said Council were very aware of the community concerns over the proposed Heritage Overlays.

"Every effort is being made to make this process transparent and to ensure that it is dealt with as soon as possible."

Mr Bawden also confirmed that at the Council meeting on 7 March, Cr Peter Paul had tabled a copy of a motion from the Heritage meeting organised by the community on 25 February 2007.

"All these things indicate just how serious Council is about resolving this issue in a way that addresses the concerns of the affected residents as well as the community’s desire to preserve character and heritage of our area."
