New Year with NatureLeave the New year parties behind and celebrate a quieter New year immersed in Nature. By Jenny Edwards - 19th December 2005 - Back to News Gippsland High Country Tours are offering a small group of nature lovers the opportunity to celebrate New Year is a unique way this year. Wonders of Wildlife Ecotour to The Haunted Stream is a 3 days total escape from the realities and stresses of everyday life.
You will learn lots about the native wildlife who inhabit these foothill forests as your guides collect data for a wildlife research project. Small mammals rarely seen will be lured into special traps with tasty bait so data can be recorded before they are safely released. Evening spotlight walks will search for large forest owls and gliding possums. River-dwelling frogs are found along the rocky stream banks and birdwatchers will be kept busy compiling a bird list.
As well as a focus on wildlife there is a strong sense of history and you will hear some great tales of the days when this peaceful site rang out the to sounds of goldminers and their families. It is hard to imagine the busy bustle that occurred here over 100 years ago and little remains to the casual observer. Your guide will be able to bring the past to life as we wander along bush trails and find hidden relics from that bygone era. How did the Haunted Stream get it's name? This is just one of the many stories your guide has to share with you.
