Neighbourhood Houses To Receive Liberal BoostNeighbourhood houses and Learning Centres throughout country Victoria will receive a much-needed funding boost under a Liberal Government. By Parliment of Victoria - 9th November 2006 - Back to News Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today that Neighbourhood Houses and Learning Centres (NHLCs) provided a vital service, especially for those living in country Victoria.
"Despite providing such a valuable service, 70 per cent of Victoria’s 350 NHLCs are funded to operate only three days a week," Mr Davis said.
"Added to that, 30 NHLCs operate completely un-funded by the Bracks Labor Government.
"NHLCs provide a network of support services, whether it be occasional child care, education, classes, social groups and skills training.
"Attendees form vital support networks and valuable friendships."
Mr Davis said the Liberal Party recognised the invaluable contribution NHLCs make to country communities, and a Liberal Government is committed to an extra $14 million funding injection to Victorian NHLCs over the next four years.
"More than 115,000 people across the state access the 380 NHLCs throughout Victoria," Mr Davis said.
"A Liberal Government will provide funding equity, with core funding for the 30 centres presently not funded by Labor.
"We will also ensure that NHLCs enhance their services to their most disadvantaged and socially isolated communities and ensure the 380 centres continue to provide key access to a broad range of community and government services, programs and activities.
"A Liberal Government will guarantee provision of an additional 2,740 hours of activities per week."
Neighbourhood Houses and Learning Centres are a vital part of the demographic of country Victorian communities.
A Liberal Government will support and enhance these services, so that more country Victorians will benefit from NHLCs into the future.
