Bass Coast Shire Council’s Free Public WiFi project was named Collaboration of the Year at the 2016 MAV Technology Awards for Excellence last week.

The aim of this project was to find a low cost solution to provide free WiFi in the main town centres across the Shire, with minimal ongoing impact on Council and business resources.

After reviewing a number of possible approaches, it was decided to trial using spare internet capacity of targeted local businesses.

Council worked with Waterfront Computers, the Phillip Island Tourism and Business Association and local businesses, launching the project in time for summer 2015/16, with free WiFi provided in the Cowes CBD, as well as the Phillip Island Visitor Information Centre in Newhaven.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Jordan Crugnale, said it was a great initiative.

"We talk often about building and strengthening partnerships with our community and here we are winning a collaboration award," Cr Crugnale said.

"The demand is obvious and Shirewide, wonderful for our visitors, our citizens and for those that may not have access at home.

''Free public WiFi is one of those platforms that can connect us in, attract visitors to businesses and highlight a precinct or gathering place.''

The roll out of NBN will further enhance the service, creating a much higher availability and increasing performance of the internet during the busy tourism and major event periods.

Council will now work with business and tourism groups in Inverloch, Wonthaggi and San Remo on future expansion.
