Inviting Feedback On Water Plan

Ensuring customers have a secure, high quality drinking water supply for the long term future is the number one priority identified by East Gippsland Water in its draft Water Plan for 2008-2013.

Nowhere has the importance of water security been reiterated more clearly than with the recent extreme weather events in the region - serious drought, devastating bush fires in the Mitchell River catchment and, most recently, severe floods.

The draft five-year plan, which is now available for public comment, sets out the Corporation’s challenges, objectives, targets and prices for the period, and highlights the need for a significant capital works program worth some $54 million.

Said Chairperson for East Gippsland Water, Robert Fordham: "Priorities highlighted in the plan take on board customer feedback about our services. They also reflect our commitment to maintain the high standards that have made us one of the top performing water corporations in Victoria.

"Tough challenges lie ahead, not least because of increasingly extreme environmental conditions.

"This Water Plan helps deliver our Water Supply Demand Strategy - which is geared at ensuring 50 years of water security in the region - and is designed to deliver significant long term benefits for residents, businesses and visitors to East Gippsland."

In preparing its draft plan, East Gippsland Water has carefully considered customer feedback from its annual customer satisfaction survey; monthly customer follow-up calls; meetings with community and interest groups; and, input from groups consulted on particular issues or projects.

The plan is now available for further public comment, before the final version is submitted to the Essential Services Commission (the water industry regulator) for approval. The closing date for feedback is 14 September 2007.

Copies of the document, together with details of how to make comment, are available from East Gippsland Water’s office at 133 Macleod Street, Bairnsdale (during office hours). They can also be obtained from East Gippsland Shire Council libraries in Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Omeo, Orbost and Paynesville, and from the Shire’s mobile library.

In addition, the plan can be viewed and downloaded from the organisation’s website www.egwater.vic.gov.au
