Stratford prepares for return of locos with competition winnersThe joint winners of a competition to help mark the return of passenger trains to Stratford have been busy working on their winning murals, which will take centre stage at celebrations marking the official return. By Wellington Shire Council - 30th June 2003 - Back to News As winners of the ‘Welcome Back Your Local Locos’ competition, Stratford Primary School and Stratford Historical Society have each won $5,000 from the State Government for their inspired murals - one tracing the history of Stratford station and the other looking at the train itself and Shakespeare.
The competition has been administered on behalf of the State Government by Wellington Shire Council, which is now helping to co-ordinate community celebrations for the official relaunch of the Stratford rail service – expected to be in mid to late August.
Said Chair of the judging committee and ABC Radio Gippsland presenter Joanne Spargo: "Congratulations to the winners. We received some fantastic entries for the competition which made picking a winner all the more difficult. The submissions from the school and historical society complement each other very well, and together they will see all generations of Stratford’s community working alongside each other to bring the mural ideas to life."
Wellington’s Mayor John Jago added: "Well done to the winners. We look forward to seeing their murals unveiled on the big day itself, when the first passenger train for ten-years pulls into Stratford station to mark the resumption of rail services. They are creating something truly special with their murals that will be a local landmark for years to come."
