at both open and under 17 levels, on Friday evenings, allowing residents to watch elite matches in their own backyard. The league’s first matches are to be held this Friday evening, from 7.15pm.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the $4.9 million redevelopment was completed in November last year and one of the key objectives of the project was to attract high level sporting events.

"The redevelopment was a partnership between Latrobe City Council, Monash University and the Federal Government, and included the construction of three new fully compliant (to international standards) netball courts, as well as basketball, volleyball and badminton courts. There are new expanded change-rooms and user group offices, a new state-of-the-art gymnasium and a member’s lounge.

"The facility is now top class and to have already attracted this elite netball league competition is testament to the quality of the centre," Cr White said.

Latrobe’s general manager recreation, culture and community infrastructure, Grantley Switzer, said that Latrobe’s reputation as the regional sporting hub of Victoria was growing.

"Our facilities are first class. We have excellent transport connections to the metropolitan area. In recent times, we have hosted top level soccer, football, rugby union, basketball and tennis. With the continued improvement of facilities in Latrobe City, it is providing us with greater opportunities to attract these types of events for our local community to experience.

"We hope that the Eastern Regional State League attracts a large following. Teams in the competition come from East Gippsland, South and West Gippsland, as well as locally, with Churchill represented in the under 17s competition," Mr Switzer explained.

"Entry to the centre is free, so for those interested in watching fast-paced, competitive sport, come along for the evening matches," Mr Switzer concluded.

The Eastern Regional State League competition will be officially launched by Netball Victoria CEO, Leigh Russell, on Friday 4 February, from 6pm, at Latrobe Leisure Churchill, Northways Rd, Churchill. Matches begin at 7.15pm and 8.30pm.
