Latrobe City’s Tree Planting Day a great successLatrobe City’s Tree Planting Day was a great success, with 2000 trees being planted by those that attended. By Latrobe City Shire - 10th September 2010 - Back to News A variety of indigenous trees and understorey plants were planted to help restore the creek embankment to good health and preventing erosion.
Twenty-three volunteers turned up to Shingles Creek, Traralgon South on Sunday 29 August, and they managed to complete a substantial amount of work in only three and a half hours.
Latrobe City Councillor, Ed Vermeulen, said that it was a gallant effort from the helpers, considering the morning weather was not very pleasant.
"It was great to see so many people come down to assist with improving the health of the local catchments, while also helping to offset council’s fleet emissions.
"The planting site was chosen due to the removal of a council-owned pine regrowth plantation, after locals were concerned with having a fire hazard so close to town. Its removal left the south side of the creek embankment exposed, requiring remediation works.
"Special thanks goes out to all of the people that provided assistance on the day, to Greening Australia, who organised the plants and fencing, prepared the site, and will provide after care, and also to the Traralgon Lions Club, who supplied a BBQ lunch on the day," Cr Vermeulen said.
Tree Planting Day is an annual event held by Latrobe City Council.
