Lighting up WonthaggiProject that would enhance the historical importance of the two sites in Wonthaggi. By news@gippsland - 7th May 2021 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council will be lighting up some of Wonthaggi’s landmarks this May, as part of the recently adopted Wonthaggi Activity Centre Plan. This project will see the existing in-ground up-lights at the coal mine poppet head in Apex Park and at the Soldiers Reserve on McBride Avenue replaced. It is anticipated these works will start on Monday, 10 May will and be completed within two weeks.

Poppet head signals
The poppet head, was relocated to Apex Park in the 1950s and is a reminder of a time when there were 24 poppet heads spread across the Wonthaggi coal mining area. It contains the whistle that echoed across the town and signalled a change of shifts for all the local coal miners, which still blows at midday each day.
Soldiers Reserve relocation
The Soldiers Reserve monument is located on the corner of Baillieu Street East and McBride Avenue and commemorates those who have served in various conflicts. Originally erected for people who served in World Wars One and Two, the monument now includes additional plaques, which have been added to commemorate other conflicts including a National Service Plaque, which was unveiled in October 2011.
Enhancing the historical significance
Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari, said this project will bring more prominence to two of Wonthaggi’s most recognisable landmarks. "The poppet head and Soldiers Reserve monument are bookends to the McBride Avenue streetscape in Wonthaggi, The new lighting will enhance these important features of our town and will draw upon the historical significance of each site at night." Cr Tessari said.
Minimised road disruptions
While these construction works may present an inconvenience, council appreciates your patience during this time. The contractor will make every effort to minimise disruptions to Apex Park and the reserve.
