Hard waste review for Latrobe CityLatrobe City Council has announced a review of its decision to ban hard waste removal. By Latrobe City Council - 25th July 2006 - Back to News The review comes after local Morwell MP Brendan Jenkins called on WorkSafe Victoria, the state’s health and safety regulator to assist council in reviewing the issues that resulted in the popular council service being stopped.
"WorkSafe has agreed to assist Latrobe City over the next three months as it looks at the possibility of reintroducing the popular service.
"The three month review will include councillors, council employees and members of the community looking at all of the health and safety concerns that led to the service being withdrawn," Mr Jenkins explained.
"WorkSafe will be providing specialist advice and assistance to the Council review group as it looks at the pros and cons of the issue.
"Hopefully, when all interested parties are better informed about the problems with the delivery of this service, they will be able to make a decision that all of the community supports," Mr Jenkins said.
Latrobe City mayor, councillor Lisa Price, said that the offer from WorkSafe would be taken up.
"The information gained through this process will benefit not only Latrobe City but also other municipalities across the state that are grappling with the issues of hard waste.
"We have been asking for this for a considerable time now and it is pleasing to see that they are at last listening to us," Cr Price explained.
"Council knows that the hard waste service was extremely popular but we had to take into account the risks that such a service could mean to those who actually handle the hard rubbish.
"We have a responsibility to make sure that those workers, like all workers, are safe in their job and that is why we have pursued WorkSafe vigorously to assist us with this issue," Cr Price added.
"If at the end of this review it is decided that the risks are too great, then we will have to make the hard decisions but at least we will clearly know where we stand," Cr Price said.
WorkSafe spokesperson Susan Allen said WorkSafe welcomed the opportunity to assist in the review and congratulated the council on its efforts.
"Latrobe City Council takes it health and safety seriously and we want to help them in meeting their obligations," Ms Allen concluded.
