Melbourne Cup Day A Public Holiday

Employees who work in the area covered by Latrobe City Council are entitled to a public holiday on Melbourne Cup Day this year.

By Latrobe City - 24th October 2008 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said the state government’s Public Holidays Amendment Bill 2008, which was passed through the Victorian Parliament, corrected the situation where some regional councils observe eleven public holidays while others observe only ten.

"The state government believed that all Victorians should be able to enjoy eleven public holidays a year no matter where they live or work. The legislation means that all employees in Victoria now benefit from eleven public holidays," Mr Buckley said.

"The legislation allows a regional council to request an alternative weekday of local significance to be the public holiday across their municipality instead of Melbourne Cup Day.

"However, while there are no doubt important days in many of our local towns and communities, there is no one single day that has significance for residents across the whole of our municipality," Mr Buckley explained.

"Consequently, the first Tuesday in November will be celebrated here in Latrobe City as a public holiday," Mr Buckley added.

Further information on public holidays in Victoria is available from the Business Victoria website www.business.vic.gov.au.
